The Affordable Care Act (ACA) permanently transformed health insurance in America by making it accessible to everyone. However, is it possible to enroll in health insurance throughout the year?
Enrolling in a health insurance plan typically takes place between Nov 1st and Jan 15th of each year. However, if you experience certain life events, you may qualify to enroll outside of the designated open enrollment period.
- Tied the knot? Choose your plan before month-end, and voila! You’re covered starting the first day of the next month.
- Welcome to parenthood! Whether you birthed a bundle of joy, adopted a cutie pie, or placed a foster child, your coverage kicks in on the same day as this life-changing event. No need to panic if you enroll in the plan within 60 days of the big day.
- If you’ve parted ways with your spouse or legally separated, waving goodbye to your health insurance plan, you might qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Keep in mind, a divorce or separation that doesn’t involve the loss of coverage doesn’t count.
- If, heaven forbid, the worst should happen and someone on your Marketplace plan passes away, you can access a Special Enrollment Period. This allows you to switch up your health plan if you need to.
Residence changes:
- Big move? Big news! If you switch houses to a new county or ZIP code, you might snag a Special Enrollment Period.
- Jet-setter? Well, hello there! If you’ve just arrived in the U.S. from a foreign country or one of its territories, you might also be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.
- If you packed your bags and waved goodbye to dorm life (student).
*If you’re moving, it’s essential to provide proof of qualifying health coverage for at least one day within the 60-day period prior to your relocation. However, if you’re moving from a foreign country or a United States territory, proof is not required.
